Our Local TownOur Local Town
Pinoso, or El Pinos if you prefer it's name in the local Valencian language, is our home town with a population somewhere around 7,500 people. If you are moving within Spain or coming here from overseas it's important to know something about the area.

We´re in the province of Alicante, one of the three that makes up the Valencian Community. Alicante province is famous for the beach resorts of the Costa Blanca though more and more people are discovering the joys of inland living, with the coast, and both Alicante and Murcia, San Javier, airports within easy reach. Having said that we are in Alicante we're only 3kms from the border with Murcia province and many of the people who do business in Pinoso every day live on the other side of the border.

The area is predominantly rural with a scattering of small towns and villages. Pinoso itself takes administrative responsibility for a number of small villages that surround the main town - places like Encebras, Caballusa, Culebrón, Rodriguillo, Lel and Ubeda. In fact Alicante province is a rarity in Spain in offering rural properties separated from neighbours as well as houses within hamlets or villages.

Nearby cities include Alicante on the coast, Elche, famous for its palm trees and Murcia now the ninth largest city in Spain. Our nearest town of any size is the twin town of Elda-Petrer or you can go the other way into Murcia for Yecla or Jumilla. We can rely on Pinoso for most everyday items including a health centre and for eating out but our local hospital is in Petrer as are the big supermarkets (Carrefour etc) and cinemas. It's Second Division football in Elche, Alicante and Murcia though Murcia were in the First division for the 2007/08 season.

The main industries are still associated with marble quarrying, shoes and wine so expect to find yourself held up on the road by a small tractor moving grapes or almonds to the local bodega or co-operative.
